FAQ
Questions, answered.
Everything people ask us about Swips™, in plain language. If yours is not here, email hello@swipsband.com and we will add it.
Using it
Can I use it for tennis, padel, golf, baseball, softball, lacrosse, rock climbing or lifting?
Yes. Swips solves sweaty hands, and hands sweat the same way whatever you are holding. We built it for pickleball because that is where the problem found us, but rosin has been the answer in baseball, gymnastics and climbing for a hundred years.
If your sport has rules about what goes on your equipment, check them first.
Is it legal in tournament play?
The USA Pickleball rulebook does not restrict what you put on your hands. It does restrict what goes on the paddle face, so keep rosin on your palm where it belongs.
Other sports set their own rules. Check yours before you play a sanctioned event.
Which wrist do I wear it on?
Your non-dominant one. The terry cloth handles your brow, and your playing hand taps the pocket between points.
How many taps do I need?
It might be two on a mild day, and five when it is 90 degrees. Your hands will tell you.
How many bands will I go through in two hours of pickleball?
If you do not sweat much, one. Most people use two. The heaviest sweaters go through as many as six. It is one reason we sell them in packs.
You know a band is done when you tap and no rosin comes out. The terry cloth is soaked and the insert is soaked with it. Swap in a fresh one and keep playing.
Nothing gets thrown away. When you get home, pull the rosin insert out of the band and let it air dry on its own. Wash the band or just air dry it. Once both are fully dry the insert goes back in and works like new.
How long does one rosin insert last?
Weeks of regular play for most people. It depends on how hard you sweat and how often you tap. When a tap stops leaving your hand dry, drop in a fresh one.
Will rosin get on my paddle or the ball?
Yes, some will end up on your paddle grip. That is the point. Rosin transfers from your hand to whatever your hand is on, and the grip is where you want it.
It is a trace, not a layer, and it is not enough to mark a ball. Tap your palm, not the paddle face.
Care and ingredients
What is rosin?
What goes into a Swips insert is our own blend, not straight rosin. We blend rock rosin with magnesium carbonate, the drying mineral gymnasts chalk up with, so it takes the sweat off your skin fast and leaves your hand feeling dry.
Rock rosin itself is pine resin. Sap is collected from pine trees, heated and cooled until it sets into a hard amber solid, then ground down. Nothing synthetic.
Athletes have leaned on it for well over a century. A baseball pitcher keeps a rosin bag on the mound. Gymnasts use it before the bars, and so do climbers, weightlifters and bowlers. Violinists run it along the bow so it does not slip on the string. Same material, same job.
Why not just use plain rosin?
Because plain rosin does not know when to stop. Pine resin softens as your hands warm up, so it keeps building on your palm. Play a long session and it ends up on your paddle, your towel and your phone.
Our blend is built to behave. The magnesium carbonate dries as the rock rosin grips, so you get enough to stop the paddle moving and not much more.
You will still find residue on your paddle grip. We are not going to pretend otherwise. That is rosin doing its job, and the grip is exactly where you want it. The aim was never zero residue. The aim was just enough grip, in the right place, without it taking over the rest of your gear.
What is in the rosin?
Our own blend of rock rosin and magnesium carbonate. That is the whole list. For external use only, and keep it out of reach of children.
Rock rosin is a natural pine resin. A small number of people are sensitive to it, so if you have a known pine or rosin allergy, skip it or patch test first. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Is it safe?
Athletes have leaned on both of these for a long time. Rock rosin is pine resin, the same family that has sat in a bag on the pitching mound for over a century. Magnesium carbonate is gym chalk, what gymnasts and climbers put on their hands before they compete.
Worth clearing up, gym chalk is not the chalk from a classroom blackboard. That is calcium carbonate or gypsum. Gym chalk is magnesium carbonate, a different mineral doing a different job.
Ingredients: Rock rosin, magnesium carbonate.
Warning: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Avoid inhalation. Do not swallow. If rash develops or pain persists, discontinue use and consult a physician. Use only as directed.
Keep out of reach of children.
What is the band made of?
Terry cloth. 85% cotton, 12% spandex, 3% nylon. Made in China, designed in Newport Beach, California.
Is it washable?
The band is. Take the rosin insert out first, machine wash cold and air dry. No tumble dryer.
The insert is not washable. It is a consumable you replace.
The product
Does it come in other colors?
Not yet. White is where we started.
Send us a note at hello@swipsband.com with the top colors you want to see. We are building the list from what people actually ask for.
What size is it?
One size fits most. Washable terry cloth with stretch, so it sits comfortably on most adult wrists. Nothing to choose and no size chart to check.
Why two in a pack?
Because a fresh one for the second hour is useful, and handing one to your partner is better. Swip. Swap. Share.
Buying and shipping
What comes in a Swips 2-Pack?
Two washable terry cloth sweatbands and two rosin inserts, each sealed in its own foil sachet. $22.
What do refills cost?
A Swips Rosin Insert Refills 2-Pack is $6 for two inserts. The band outlasts a lot of inserts, so refills are the thing you reorder.
There is also a Refills x3 at $15, which is six inserts and ships free on its own.
How fast does it ship, and what does shipping cost?
Orders ship from Newport Beach, California the next business day. Tracking comes by email the moment it goes out.
Shipping is a flat $6, and it is free once your order reaches $35. Refills are the exception: they ship free on any order of $15 or more, so a Refills x3 pack arrives with nothing added.
Do you ship internationally?
Not yet. We ship within the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii and APO and FPO addresses. Email hello@swipsband.com and we will tell you when we open your country.
Can I return it after I have used it?
Returns are within 30 days on unworn, unused items in original packaging with the rosin insert seal intact. Once an insert is opened we cannot resell it, which is a hygiene rule rather than a sales one.
If your order arrives damaged, email us within 7 days with photos and we will replace it or refund you in full, shipping included. Full terms are in our Refund Policy.
Can my pro shop or club carry Swips?
Yes. Wholesale is 50% of retail with no minimum order, paid by invoice. See the wholesale page to apply.
